How to get Mental Health Services for your child:

Receiving Mental Health Services and treatment can be a difficult journey to navigate. NC Families United is always ready to help families find help for their child in their community.  Please feel free to contact our office if you have additional questions that you do not find on this page This page provides information for families looking for Mental Health treatment and other related services for their children.

What to Do First

 

STOP: If this is a crisis situation and your child is in danger of being hurt or hurting others because of an acute mental health symptom call 911 and be sure to explain to the operator  that you have a situation that involves a person with a mental health issue that needs help. Ask that they send in a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trained officer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_intervention_training.

 

If the situation is not that critical but still requires immediate attention you can always bring your child to the emergency room. Please remember to bring insurance information, a crisis plan for that child if available and any medications your child takes. Always be sure to disclose to the medical responders what is going on and why you are at the hospital. Good mental health treatment relies on honesty. It is ok to get help for your child. Many parents have been in your shoes.

  • If it is not an emergency as describe above:

You would contact Managed Care Organization (MCO/LME) in your region. The LME provides a “help line” 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist with substance abuse and mental health issues. http://www.ncdhhs.gov/mhddsas/lmeonblue.htm

When you call you can:

Receive mental health information,

Have a quick evaluation of the circumstances on the phone and receive triage instructions

Be referred to an appropriate treatment provider, or

Get immediate assistance in an emergency situation by calling 911.

 

If you have a treatment provider in mind, it is ok to call that provider directly and skip the MCO initial process.

 

The treatment provider will perform a comprehensive assessment. An assessment helps the professional identify the problems (and strengths) of the youth and to develop a course of action called treatment plan

  • Families must keep in mind that keeping a youth at home while they receive treatment is generally recommended before residential options are considered.
  • You can also ask your MCO to speak to their Systems of Care Coordinator in NC. The Systems of Care Coordinator will also explain the process of the screening/assessment of your youth and any recommendations for treatment or other actions to help the youth and your family. The System of Care Coordinator may also be ale to help you set up a Child and Family Team that can wrap around your child with natural supports and paid services.
